Yield Constraints of Sikkim Mandarin (Citrus reticulate) and Possible Management Strategies: A Review

The Sikkim Mandarin (Citrus reticulata) is one of the most important fruit crops for ages. valleys Tista and Rangeet rivers their tributaries adjoining Darjeeling district West Bengal offer an ideal Himalayan climate cultivation Mandarin. Analysis shows that during 2020-21 produced 26.65 MT mandarin from 13.26 thousand hectares land with a productivity 2.01MT /ha. It was seen there had been increase 1.68-thousand-hectare area in 2014-15 producing additional 7.66MT. However, while production have increased, has plummeted by 38.69 per cent over period to 2020-21. Due multiple reasons, poor returns citrus orchards ushered farmers' unwillingness invest mandarin. constraints like declining soil non-adherence amelioration measures, incidence pests diseases fly, dieback etc, lack marketing channels proper storage as well preservation units are few name. There need increasing maintain glory species. major strategy/approach would be manage basic problem which nutritional management cropping area. Studying scientifically managing it alone may wipe -off problems some nutrient depletion. Taking other appropriate measures control should next strategy. Finding loopholes defining strategies mitigate those remain scope this study. This review based on available secondary data observations made farm visits.
